AFRC History

AFRC partners with regional groups to develop sustainable forest economy

The AFRC is a partner with Rural Action (www.ruralaction.org), the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development (MACED, www.maced.org) and Appalachian Sustainable Development (www.asdevelop.org) on the Central Appalachian Forestry Alliance. This project undertakes a variety of strategies for creating sustainable forest-based jobs and income in the economically distressed Central Appalachian coalfields. These initiatives include:

The Green and Regionally Oriented Wood Initiative:

Among other things, this intiative is deploying two full time lumber salesmen to work with certified and local wood producers in WV, KY, OH, VA, and TN.

GreenWood Sales Assistance:

This GreenWood Sales Assistance is a non-profit project developed to assist green builders in purchasing wood products from sustainably managed forests in Appalachia. This service helps builders and architects create jobs and income in Appalachia while promoting sustainable forest management.
